Today’s free 2D textures are from Zuhria Alfitra, an indie game developer from Yogyakarta in Indonesia.

In keeping with the time of year, his texture pack is full of tiling textures for platform games in a wintery wonderland setting. The collection includes an atmospheric background featuring snow-clad mountains, a snowman, trees, ground tiles, crates, ice, water, signposts and even an igloo. There are 18 tiles, 10 objects & decorations and 1 seamlessly tiling background in total.

Zuhria’s textures are supplied in a variety of formats, from ready-to-use PNG files to SVG format, so you can edit the source vector files if you download Inkscape (a free vector-graphics editing application).

The textures are licensed under Creative Common Zero which means that they are free to use in both personal and commercial projects. Maybe this is exactly what you need to get started on prototyping your game this weekend?

Are you looking for free user interface textures for your games?

If so, you’re in luck: graphic designer Hamza Trabelsi from Tunisia has created a great little Open UI texture pack; the vector-based cartoon style graphics are ideal for casual games and include all the usual buttons, banners, energy/health bars etc.

The textures are supplied in a single SVG file, so to make individual textures or a texture atlas you will need to download Inkscape which is an awesome free vector-graphics editing application.

Hamza’s textures are available with a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 3.0 license which means that they are free to use in both personal and commercial projects as long as you credit him by name in your game and include the license if you decide to publish modified versions of his textures.

To start 2015 off with a bang, be sure to check out Kenney’s brand new 2D tower defense texture pack. It’s ideally suited for isometric games and among the included textures are terrain tiles, trees, roads, rivers, rocks and modular tower blocks.
