Free background textures for casual games

Kenney

Today’s freebie is from Kenney and features a collection of background textures for casual games. Various ready-made tiling backgrounds are already included. The collection also contains everything from clouds and trees to pyramids, houses and castles as individual textures.

All of the textures are also available in vector format this time, so that you can resize them without quality loss if you have access to Adobe Illustrator. Alternatively, just download Inkscape which is an excellent free vector editing application.

As usual, Kenney’s textures are available with Creative Common Zero, so you can use them for free in both personal and commercial projects. If you like his textures, we encourage you to support his work with a donation.

Free mobile game user interface textures

Mobile Game GUI by Graphic Burger

Today’s freebie is made by graphic designer Raul Taciu from Romania. His awesome user interface texture collection for casual games is full of vector-based buttons, banners, energy/money/health bars and so on.

The textures are supplied in a single PSD file, so if you need individual textures or a texture atlas you will need access to Adobe Photoshop.

Please note that you will also need to download three free Google Web fonts: Carter One, Skranji and Averia Sans Libre.

Raul’s textures are available with a very liberal license which means that they are free to use in both personal and commercial projects.

License: Graphic Burger License.

Free tile textures for a Zelda-like 2D RPG game

2D Circle Graphics by Dan Cook

Today’s freebie is a collection of rather pretty free game tiles for 2D Zelda-like RPG games.

Dan Cook who is currently a game developer at Seattle-based Spry Fox made these textures back in 2006 but that doesn’t make them any less useful; the tile collection is ideal for prototyping 2D RPG games and include both village, interior and wilderness-themed tiles.

The textures are supplied as sprite sheets in BMP format (unfortunately without transparency masks), so you will need to crop them and add transparency in image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Gimp which is a free alternative.

Dan’s textures include a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license which means that they are free to use in both personal and commercial projects as long as you credit him by name (see below) and provide a link to the license in your game.
